The Acting Comptroller of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A, Deputy Comptroller Oladapo Olukayode Afeni, has called for stronger collaboration among security agencies to combat smuggling, trans-border crimes and other security threats.
Afeni made the call during a familiarization tour of security and law enforcement agencies in Lagos, stressing that the unit’s responsibilities extend beyond border protection to include safeguarding Nigeria’s national interests through effective inter-agency cooperation.
Speaking during a visit to the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Afeni said effective security operations required synergy among relevant agencies rather than isolated efforts.
He emphasised the importance of intelligence sharing, information exchange and joint enforcement operations in strengthening the fight against smuggling and other forms of criminality.
The Customs chief also expressed concern that some individuals might exploit the election period to engage in criminal activities capable of undermining public peace and security.
He called for sustained cooperation among security agencies to identify emerging threats, prevent criminal activities and maintain security across the country.
DC Afeni also visited Headquarters, 81 Division, Nigerian Army, where he was received by the General Officer Commanding (GOC), Major General Adebayo Abdulrahman Babalola. The GOC highlighted the significance of joint efforts against criminality and advised against unnecessary administrative bottlenecks that could hinder operational efficiency.
The courtesy visits underscore the commitment of FOU Zone ‘A’ to advancing collaborative enforcement in support of national security, revenue protection, trade facilitation, and the overall economic interests of Nigeria.
