The Commissioner of Police, Ports Authority Police (Western) Command, Oluwatoyin Iyabode Agbaminoja, on Monday 23 March, 2026, called for calm and constructive engagement among port stakeholders following rising tensions over increased shipping charges.
Agbaminoja made the appeal during a strategic meeting with key industry players, including the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), Africa Association of Professional Freight Forwarders and Logistics of Nigeria, the Association of Nigeria Licensed Customs Agents, and the Nigerian Shippers’ Council.
In a press statement issued by the police public relations officer, Officer, Ports Authority Police (Western) Command, Lagos, ASP Isaac Hundeyi, stated the meeting was convened to address growing concerns within the port sector over recent increases in shipping costs by shipping companies, which have triggered dissatisfaction among freight forwarders and logistics operators.
Speaking at the meeting, the police commissioner urged stakeholders to avoid actions capable of disrupting port activities, such as protests or picketing. She stressed that Nigeria’s ports are vital to the nation’s economy, serving as the primary gateway for international trade.
According to her, any shutdown of port operations would have significant consequences for the country’s supply chain, economic stability, and revenue generation.
Agbaminoja assured stakeholders that their grievances would be addressed through appropriate institutional channels, in collaboration with the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, as the port economic regulator
She encouraged continuous engagement, mutual respect, and cooperation among all stakeholders to maintain industrial harmony within the port environment
The Nigerian Shippers’ Council and union representatives present at the meeting commended the proactive intervention of the Ports Authority Police (Western) Command and agreed on the need to prioritize dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes in the overall interest of the nation’s economy.
The Ports Authority Police also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order across port facilities, including terminals, jetties, inland container depots, and bonded terminals, while supporting lawful engagement aimed at improving port efficiency, trade Facilitation and investors confidence.
