As part of efforts to enhance the physical and mental well-being of officers, the Ogun I Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has rolled out a mandatory weekly fitness programme for officers of the Command, signalling a renewed focus on health as a pillar of service delivery.
In a press statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent Chado Zakari on Friday, January 16, 2026, said the initiative was officially launched on Thursday, January 15, 2026, in line with the vision of the Comptroller-General of Customs to build a physically fit and mentally resilient workforce capable of meeting the demanding responsibilities of the Nigeria Customs Service.
Speaking during the launch, the acting controller of Ogun I Area command, Deputy Comptroller Olukayode Afeni noted that the nature of Customs duties—often involves long hours strenuous field operations, and high-pressure assignments—makes regular physical exercise essential. According to him, maintaining good health is key to effective performance and sustained productivity.
“Only when we are healthy can we perform effectively,” he said. “The goal is to ensure that every officer is physically fit and mentally sharp to serve the nation better.”
He noted that the exercise programme is not a one-off event but a weekly routine scheduled for every Thursday.
According to him, the initiative is also designed to foster teamwork, informal interaction, and camaraderie among officers, thereby strengthening discipline, morale, and operational preparedness.
“We are deliberately making fitness a culture in this Command. A fit team is a formidable team, and this initiative reflects our commitment to building a resilient and service-ready workforce,” Deputy Comptroller Afeni added.
Reaffirming that officer welfare remains a top priority under his leadership, he urged all personnel to embrace physical fitness as an integral part of their professional and personal lives.
The inaugural exercise session featured a range of activities, including jogging, aerobics, football, and volleyball, with officers participating enthusiastically in a show of unity and commitment to healthier living.
