The Tin-Can Island port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced that the command generated over N240.3b as revenue from January to 14th of March 2024. The Customs Area Controller(CAC) of the command, Comptroller Dera Nnadi disclosed this to the newsmen on Friday, 15th March, 2024, at the command's Conference hall. According to Nnadi, the command made an impressive performance in revenue generation as the sum of N240,302,000,000.00 generated so far shows that the command, considering it's monthly revenue target of N94billion has surpassed its January and February target by 107 percent and 141 percent respectively.
He also disclosed that the Command's anti-smuggling drive through their eagle-eyes yielded effort to the seizure of arms, ammunition and illicit drugs which were imported into the country by a drug syndicate. The arms intercepted by the command, are a total of 11 Rifles and six Pistols which includes, one 20P 9964 Rifle; another 20P 9964 Rifle; one Pump Action Rifle; one Practical Tactical 30H PTO19922 Rifle; another 20P 992 Rifle; two AV Pump Action Rifle; another P10115 Rifle and other dangerous weapons from different containers imported into the country at different times.
But the customs boss said the source of the arms cannot be disclosed as investigation is still on adding that some persons arrested in line with the seizures are still in detention and would be prosecuted. “Also, in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), we seized psychotropic substances imported into the country. Based on this collaboration, several kilograms of Cannabis Sativa have been seized. In recent time, we have also seized 23 packages containing 23 kilograms of heroin concealed in a container, the identity of which we are still keeping secret due to ongoing investigation. “Our vigour to make these seizures was in furtherance of the resolve of the federal government to make this country safe. We are all aware that the importers of these seizures intend to use them for nefarious activities which includes support to insurgents and kidnapping activities and other vices that are inimical to the well-being and security of our nation,” he stated. The arms and ammunition were handed over to the State Security Service (SSS) while the drugs were handed over to the NDLEA by Comptroller Nnadi.
While receiving the drugs on behalf of the NDLEA, Mr Mohammed Aminu Abubarkar, the Commander Narcotics of TinCan Island port appreciated the efforts of the Nigeria Customs service in the fight against drug trafficking which led to the arrest of the drugs being handed over. He commended the efforts of the Special Intelligence Unit of the NDLEA TinCan Island Port for sourcing for information and processing the information which culmilated to what is being witnessed today. He stated that the source of the drugs is from an international syndicate noted for trafficking illicit drugs across different continents, noting that the seized heroin has a relationship with that which was seized recently at the Murtala Mohammed international airport where 51.9kg of heroin was seized.
Compt Nnadi appreciated the continuous support of the CGC, Bashir Adeniyi MFR and his management team. “Every support from the Service headquarters is significant in enhancing the Command’s operational activities and contributes largely to its achievements. He equally commended the efforts of all officers in rank and file for their impressive dedication.
“The efforts of our CIU operatives, Customs Police, Enforcement Unit, amongst other units and other sister security agencies, are also highly appreciated,” he stated.
