The International Women Day which was observed on March 8th of every year, was celebrated in grand style on Friday as Tin can Island Command female officers joined the global world to mark the event.
2024 IWD is dedicated to recognizing the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women worldwide.
The theme for these year International Women’s Day tagged, “Invest in Women, Accelerate Progres.”
Speaking at the event, the Customs Area Controller(CAC) of Tin Can Island Port Command, Comptroller Dera Nnadi, emphasizes the contribution and role women plays in the society and the misconception of the
Industry being considered as men's world.
He acknowledged the significance of women in revenue generation, support for industry activities, and their leadership roles in various units and terminals at the command.

Nnadi commended the women of the command for their effort towards the revenue target for the month of February, achieving a collection of N100 billion against a set target of N94 billion.
“The maritime industry is an industry that is erroneously considered a men’s world but the truth is that without the women who take care of the men, this industry cannot survive. Women are one of the greatest stakeholders in this industry'.
“It is the women that trained the world because you are the ones that take care of the children who grow up to become men", he said.
In her address, the Chairperson of Customs Wives Association (COWA), Tincan Island Chapter, Mrs. Dera Nnadi, while emphasizing on womens qualities, urged women to be patient, humble and respectful.
Her words, ”As chairperson of COWA, what we do is all about bringing women to the limelight, to be included in whatever we are doing. Women are always sidelined so we are advocating that women should be recognized in the society. We are not agitating for equality with our husbands myself inclusive, but to be loved and respected.
Continuing," Do your part as a woman, try and help your husbands, we should be a helpmates and not a dependant,we need to help our husband in training the children, both financially too," Mrs. Dera stated.

Deputy Comptroller General (DCG) Catherine Ekekezie (rtd), emphasized that women should be empowered for a better society,
"Empower women and you will see a better world, its as easy as that, women don't have mind, only when you put the wrong woman in certain position, then you expect bad result.
She encouraged women to embrace good qualities and contribute to creating a better society, adding that the way you dress, talk and reason brings the good quality in you as a woman, be a role model to your children and teach them to be diligent", she advised.
Ekekezie underscored that women should be celebrated not for equality but for their role in helping men make a better society.
Those in attendance are the Customs Officers Wives Association (COWA) Tin Can Port Chapter, led by Chairperson Mrs. Chinelo Dera Nnadi, female staff from sister agencies, Department of State Security Services, commands female officers and women journalists.
